[Journal] OWNZORED PART 3

Damn, when it rains it pours.

I got a hold of Apple, and it turns out somebody tried to order an iBook with my Mastercard. I jokingly asked for the shipping address so I could go beat somebody up, and the response was that for that exact reason they couldn't give it to me. That's understandable. If I were serious about taking vigilante action, it would probably be some poor sap at some convenient location who took the fall. At least the cops are likely to ask some questions before they start shooting.

That is so fucked up.

Do you know where they got your number?

I'll bet it was a restaurant.

Seconding Kat's sentiment here. It's really scary to think how easy it is to lift our CC numbers in restaurants.

Well, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a restaurant, since I only use the Mastercard for online purchases and automated billing. I only use my bank card at restaurants, which I suddenly realize is a very bad idea, so I'll be fixing that soon.

I did recently try to buy some RAM from a vendor on Yahoo! Shops that made me a bit nervous. When the transaction failed at first, I decided to drop the order and buy my RAM somewhere else. That's the only time in recent memory where I've given my number to a vendor I didn't feel I could trust, but it does seem like a stretch to accuse them of handing my number out as retribution.

Oh well. As annoying as this all is, I think I'm safe from financial ruin.

That's right -- all the online vendors. God knows, 1-800 Flowers and Amazon have my numbers. Makes me a bit nervous...

If someone hasn't suggested it already, you my want to contact the Office of Privacy Protection.

or check out:

I was under the impression that CA-OPP was supposed to help out with this stuff if you reported the incident to them... however it isn't clear to me if that is what you want to do or not... I guess you could call their 800 number and see what happens.
